Pilates Bodies
|
As Joseph Pilates put it over 30 years ago, “ In 10
sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 sessions you’ll see the
difference, and in 30 sessions you’ll have a different body.”
What is Pilates?
Pilates (pi-LAH-teez) exercise, performed in the
U.S. since the 1920s, is named after its inventor, Joseph H.
Pilates. He was a boxer and dancer who also studied yoga and Zen
meditation. The method encompasses more than 500 controlled, precise
movements, designed to stretch and strengthen muscle without adding
bulk and improve musculoskeletal function. The exercises require
concentration and deep, coordinated breaths - working the body and
the mind. They focus on the body's vital energy core (an equal
balance of abdominal and lower back musculature) to build strength
and agility in a balanced way. The exercises are performed on a
padded floor mat or with special apparatus such as the Reformer, the Barrel, Fitness ball, and Magic circle.

- Instead of
performing many repetitions of each exercise, Joseph Pilates preferred fewer,
more precise movements, requiring proper form and control.
-
Because your mind is
required to engage with your body to perform the movements correctly, you
experience a new awareness of muscle function and control.
-
The “powerhouse” – abdomen, lower
back and buttocks – is supported and strengthened, enabling the rest of the
body to move freely. True strength and power emanates from a strong and stable
foundation. From that, flexibility, range of motion and a long, lean body will
result.
Because conditioning
sessions are done one-to-one, each session is tailored to your specific needs,
regardless of your current level of fitness – from sedentary office workers to a
fitness enthusiast.
Debbie
trained at Tribeca Body Works and has been teaching pilates on a one-to-one
basis since 2002. She has seen her students become stronger, more flexible and
lean in a short amount of time. Call for more information and to see what times
